The Dragon – Poetry for Kids

Hey friend! I’m back with a bang with the penultimate part of the ever-popular fantasy poetry for kids series. I’ve been saving this one up for a while. This week it’s a dark fantasy poem featuring a dragon, simply intitled, The Dragon. There is only one more to come, and then I’ll have an exciting announcement. You don’t have to wait though, join my email list for all the earliest updates on what is happening in the world of a writing wizard! I bet you can’t guess what the final fantasy poem will be.

Anyway, it’s time to unleash the dragon!

The Dragon

It hisses and stares out, its eyes glow with envy
Those that should be green, but they glow fiery red
Upon its sweet horde, the dragon it ponders
Which human kingdom will it ravage next?

The reptilian king on a mountain of gold, burns
The humans have sparkles within their castle walls
Why should they hold onto its coveted prize?
It belongs to the dragon, and it wants it all

It stares out from the hill, cravings so deadly
As one kingdom’s tower grabs hold of its gaze
It yearns and it burns, and it bristles with envy
It snarls and it spits, and it twitches with rage

It’s tongue flicks in and out from its mouth, ever-menacing
Before that mighty beast will take to the air
Heading right for that unsuspecting kingdom
It takes to the wing, leaves behind it, its lair

It crosses the valley then over the mountains
The wings whoosh with power, there’s a rumble above
The small folk they run, but the dragon ignores them
It’s come for the sparkles, for the jewels that it loves

The first that they’ll know, is the dragon’s black shadow
When it looms over the village and to the castle ahead
And they’ll scurry like rats up to the battlements
They’ll scream out in fear and in an instant be dead

It dreams of the cries, as it’s heading there slowly
It dreams of its prize, of the treasures to come
It desperately flies to fulfil its cold desires
There’s no hope to hide, and even less hope to run

Soon as it reaches the village, the warning bells sound
With one whoosh of fire, leaves half the homes gone
The blackened survivors limp off to hide in the woodland
Without even a care, the dragon moves on

With the castle walls in its sights, the arrows start flying
They bounce off its scales, they are harder than stone
There’s no point in fighting, no point in crying
They weep for their children while they die alone

And the brave knights they pile inside the grand hall
But the big wooden doors are no match for its flame
It turns them to ash, and the soldiers that brace them
It stands over the king, its sparkles to claim

The king takes to his knees, and he begs it for mercy
He begs for his life and his daughter’s so young
But mercy is a stranger to that dragon so deadly
And in a mere second, the royal family is gone

Over some days the dragon raided and plundered
Taking all the sparkles, back to where it dwells
Swooping and flapping with thunderous power
His stash fills his cave and quickly it swells

Once the dragon had stuffed its cave so full of treasure
Sparkles stacked to the ceiling, right up from the floor
So now pleased with its work the dragon stands happy
It bellows black smoke and rumbles a roar

Now with the exertion the dragon grows weary
There’s no room atop the stash of treasure so high
So it digs a small nest at the foot of the hoard
It curls in a ball and bids its beloved sparkles goodnight

And it twitches and dreams of more gold tomorrow
It’s all that it wants, it’s all that it loves
But the huge stack of treasure comes crashing down quickly
The huge mighty dragon, by its greed, it is crushed
